Peer Learning – Rediscover Learning

In times of digitalization, learning has taken on a whole new meaning for the working world. And there’s more: future-oriented work means, above all, lifelong learning. But what does learning mean today? And how can learning support more effective and collaborative teamwork? Time to take a closer look at some learning models. Today: peer learning

Collective and effective – Peer learning

If we work collaboratively in the future, we can and should also learn collaboratively and share our knowledge. Peer learning is a solution for that.

Peer learning refers to various forms of cooperative learning. It is not only about the transfer of knowledge, but also about the shared exchange of experience. Peer learning is affordable, effective, and sustainable, and what you’ve learned fits perfectly into the context of your company. It also networks employees with each other and promotes communication within the organization along the way.

The 70/20/10 model

The 70/20/10 model states that people learn…

  • 70% through experience and practice while working (learning on the job)
  • 20% through other people, colleagues, and networks (peer learning)
  • 10% through formal education (traditional education: seminars, books, training…)

These findings and the 70/20/10 model are nothing new. They are based on studies from the 1980s conducted by the US Center for Creative Leadership, a global provider of executive education.

The fact that peer learning is currently on the rise is consistent with the 70/20/10 model because peer learning should also play an important role in the 70%, learning on the job.

The right mix

Classical learning methods should still continue to have their place, however. Companies can follow different approaches and offer different options. This gives employees more freedom and personal responsibility.

But it’s clear: due to the increasing complexity and dynamics in everyday work, companies must be learning organizations that can react flexibly and ensure a good transfer of knowledge within the company. The knowledge needed for the digital transformation is already there. It just needs to be recognized, cleverly networked and interconnected. Peer learning offers a good solution.
